Framing Your Image: The Finer Subtleties of Earrings

What makes earrings professional or not?

What makes earrings professional or not?

for a Professional Presentation

In business, we all have to make presentations. Whether it’s to acquire a new client, propose a new concept, sell a product or service, or even apply for a new position.  In my last article I discussed the benefits of wearing a bold necklace as the bottom part of a frame to keep their eyes focused on your face. Now, I’d like to turn your eyes toward your ears… the sides of the frame.  It has been said, that the frame is as important as the picture.

Do you come across as sure and decisive, or as self important and pushy?

Do they see someone whom they’ll enjoy interacting with, or a boring, wimpy drone?

How you dress, and the way you present yourself, are often more important in the beginning of the business communication process than how smart you are, or how good your product or service is.

It’s startling how some of the smartest and most accomplished businesswomen have had to do it "the hard way" because they tried to compete in the same "business attire" battleground as their male associates. Many take the easy way out and go for boring simplicity in the way they dress, not wanting to appear too frivolous or feminine.

You’re not one of the guys… take advantage of that.

When it comes to earrings, it is more of a case of what not to do than what to do.

What Not To Do:

1.  No chandeliers

2.  Nothing that jingles or tinkles

3.  Nothing flirty

And while we’re talking about no jingle-jangle, that means no charm bracelets or clanking stacks of bangles. They’re distracting, noisy and annoying. Your message should be the most moving part of your presentation.

What To Do:

1.  This is business. A little sparkle is fine, after all you want to attract and hold their eyes on your face.

2.  A drop

3.  Some movement

4.  Some color

And you’re there.

You might have just a couple of well-tailored suits, smart blouses and trim dresses, but the visual power resides in your accessories. Bold and tasteful and that’s how you’ll be perceived. Too blingy, too colorful or too hesitant and that’s how you’ll be pigeonholed.

I have a collection of large bracelets that my husband calls my "Wonder Woman" bracelets. They project strength and boldness and have become a part of my signature style. As my mother always said… "If you dress like an ordinary woman, you’ll be treated like an ordinary woman."

This isn’t fashion… it’s business. It’s developing a style and image that will capture attention, command respect and project authority.

Next time I’d like to discuss how to develop a distinctive and memorable personal style.
