Opening night of SXSW Film, "Blacktino" premiered with praise. One of the reasons it's World Premiere had so much energy is because Austin people root for Austin and this film was shot here.
Local Director Aaron Burns also wrote this coming of age comedy about a half-black, half-hispanic geek named Stefan Daily (played by Austin's own Austin Marshall). About the only cool thing he's got going for him is his black power pick that sits in his afro. He is an obese kid living with his grandmother. His movie producer father isn't around and his mother is a drug addict. Stefan finds solice with the other kids in the Theater Department. His best friend Laura (Devyn Ray) encourages him and helps him find hope in several areas of his life.
The plot isn't very strong, but this is Aaron Burn's freshman effort and it does have a lot of heart. Devyn Ray is the highlight of the film and makes Austin proud. Danny Trejo is brillant as Laura's father. SXSW always has hip events and this film was no different. There was a food truck parked by The Paramount Theatre giving out free tacos to the crowd. There was also a backdrop of a high school hallway for people to take pictures,
